Art+Interpretation: Introducing the IEEE VIS 2014 Arts Program

Proceedings of the IEEE VIS Arts Program (VISAP)This paper introduces VISAP'14, the IEEE VIS 2014 Arts Program. We discuss the motivations leading to the choice of this year's theme, Art+Interpretation, and provide an overview of the work presented in the Arts Program papers track and art show. We describe our process of creating an effective interdisciplinary peer review system where artists and researchers decided jointly on installations and papers that were of the interest to the various communities present at IEEE VIS. We conclude with further ideas for improving future incarnations of VISAP, which may also be of interest to organizers of other interdisciplinary arts conferences

Cette contribution vise dans un premier temps à réaliser un recensement des programmes fermés avec contrôle des accès en France. Puis, une typologie des ensembles fermés a été mise en œuvre. Enfin, l'article s'oriente vers une étude des représentations qui ont cours à propos des ensembles résidentiels fermés, par une analyse des discours produits par les principaux acteurs concernés par le phénomène : les promoteurs, les résidants de ces complexes fermés et enfin les élus et techniciens en charge de l'urbanisme ou de l'habitat

A three-step interaction pattern for improving discoverability in finger identification techniques

However, the numerous possibilities enabled by such vast space come at the cost of discoverability. To alleviate this problem, we introduce a three-step interaction pattern inspired by hotkeys that also supports feedforward. We illustrate this interaction with three applications allowing us to explore and adapt it in different context

IEEE VIS 2014 Arts Program Exhibition Catalog

International audienceIn certain ways artists and visualization researchers share common goals: to make things visible which are normally difficult to see; and to enable reasoning about information that we might otherwise remain ignorant of. A conventional explanation of the differences between art practice and visualization research is that artistic exploration raises new questions, while visualization research aims to help domain experts answer existing questions. However, these categorizations may be oversimplified. Media artists create opportunities for reflecting on cultural issues, but also highlight how we absorb technology and explore how the exposure to tremendous amounts of data affects our daily lives. In the visualization community, significant emphasis has been placed on notions such as indicating uncertainty, accurately portraying data provenance, and using narrative techniques to aid in transmitting information more effectively. Visualization systems not only provide a representation of data collections, but also, wittingly or unwittingly, provide an interpretation of that data. Hence, potential areas of overlap between art and research practices are becoming more discernible.In the call for entries for Art+Interpretation– the title of this year’s Arts Program– we asked artists to think about the role of interpretation in art and visualization, and to reflect on possible answers to these questions: Can artistic practice offer insight into thinking about the effective interpretabilityof complex data? Conversely, can visualization research offer quantifiable methods to artists seeking to investigate and represent cultural phenomena?The thirteen artists and collaborative teams participating in the VISAP’14 Art Show present work that is not only aesthetically compelling, but that also wrestles with these questions, using their art as a method for analyzing existing methods of interpretation and as an opportunity to present new forms of meaning-making. We invite you to join with the VISAP’14 artists in thinking about the many intersections between art and research

A heuristic for the retrieval of objects in low resolution video

International audienceIn this paper, we tackle the problem of matching of objects in video in the context of the rough indexing paradigm. In this context, the video data are of very low resolution and segmentation is consequently inaccurate. The region features (texture, color, shape) are not strongly relevant due to the resolution. The structure of the objects must be considered in order to improve the robustness of the matching of regions. Indeed, the problem of object matching can be expressed in terms of directed acyclic graph (DAG) matching. Here, we propose a method based on a heuristic in order to approach object matching. The results are compared with those of a method based on relaxation matching
